Pitch Perfecting: How to Tell (And Sell) Your Story

  • Rose City Book Pub 1329 Northeast Fremont Street Portland, OR, 97212 United States (map)

Hey you! Are you a writer trying to land an agent? Do you have a dream publisher you're conspiring to cross paths with at a writing conference this summer? When friends ask about your story, do you panic and word-vomit?

You're not alone! We're writers. Talking about our work is an entirely different skill set to hone. One that only gets easier with practice. So, let's practice!

Join author and pitch doctor Fitz Cyr for a hands-on workshop focused on honing a successful pitch. We'll begin with introductions before diving into pitching best practices - how long should it be, how much should you tell, and how do you hook your target audience? This will be followed with a brief FOCUS block for fine-tuning your pitch on paper. Then, we'll break into small groups to apply some of the lessons through guided discussion. Throughout this workshop, there will be timed "checkpoints" for fine-tuning your pitch on paper. We'll also discuss ways of managing nerves or anxiety around presenting your work, whether it's to strangers or friends.

While you'll be encouraged to share your pitch within your small group for feedback, all participants will have the opportunity to share their pitch with the room at the end of the workshop, as we close out with an open mic.

Bring your questions! Bring your anxieties! This workshop will have solutions for both, and you'll leave with a well-rounded pitch you can feel good about taking out into the world.
